Founded in 2002, the company combines elegant ships, personalized service, and culturally rich itineraries to create unforgettable journeys across Europe, Asia, Africa, and beyond. The Fleet
AmaWaterways operates a modern fleet of approximately 29 river cruise ships, sailing across Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America. Designed for an intimate and upscale experience, most of the line’s vessels are relatively small compared to ocean cruise ships, typically accommodating between about 100 and 196 guests depending on the ship and region. This smaller capacity allows for a more personalized atmosphere, with spacious staterooms, multiple dining venues, and high crew-to-guest ratios that enhance service and comfort onboard.

Accommodation Choices
Accommodation on AmaWaterways ships is designed to combine comfort, style, and scenic immersion, with a range of staterooms and suites to suit different preferences. Guests can choose from four main categories: fixed window staterooms, French balcony staterooms, twin (or “double”) balcony staterooms, and spacious suites. Entry-level staterooms, typically around 160 square feet, feature large windows (non-opening) and efficient layouts, while higher-category rooms offer floor-to-ceiling glass doors and balconies that provide fresh air and panoramic river views. Many ships are especially known for their innovative twin-balcony design, combining a French balcony with a full outdoor veranda in the same stateroom. Suites offer the most luxurious experience, with expanded living areas, marble bathrooms, and premium amenities such as full-size tubs and multi-jet showers. Across all categories, accommodations are thoughtfully appointed with modern comforts like plush bedding, Wi-Fi, entertainment systems, and upscale bath products, creating a boutique hotel-style atmosphere on board.

Destinations
AmaWaterways offers a diverse range of destination experiences designed to immerse travellers in the culture, history, and natural beauty of each region they visit. Its itineraries span Europe’s iconic rivers—such as the Danube, Douro, Rhine, Rhône, Saône and Seine—as well as more exotic destinations in Asia (the Mekong), Africa (Chobe and the Nile), and South America (Magdalena river),  allowing guests to explore everything from historic capitals and medieval towns to wildlife-rich landscapes and remote villages. Cruises typically include a variety of daily shore excursions—such as guided city tours, cultural tastings, hiking and biking adventures, and visits to UNESCO World Heritage Sites—often offered at different activity levels to suit individual preferences. With many itineraries ranging from 7 to over 20 nights and options for pre- and post-cruise land programs, AmaWaterways provides a well-rounded and in-depth way to experience each destination both on and off the river.

Dining
Dining aboard AmaWaterways is a central part of the onboard experience, offering a blend of gourmet cuisine, regional flavours, and flexible dining venues. Guests enjoy all meals included, with breakfast and lunch featuring both buffet and à la carte options, and dinner served as a multi-course experience with a choice of expertly prepared dishes. Menus are inspired by the destinations visited, incorporating fresh, locally sourced ingredients and regional specialties, often paired with high-quality wines from nearby vineyards. In addition to the main restaurant, many ships feature specialty venues such as The Chef’s Table—an intimate, reservation-only experience where guests can watch chefs prepare a multi-course tasting menu—as well as al fresco dining options and, on select ships, additional restaurants offering alternative atmospheres. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks are included with lunch and dinner, along with a daily cocktail hour, enhancing the overall culinary journey. With attentive service and accommodations for dietary needs, AmaWaterways delivers a refined, destination-focused dining experience comparable to a high-end restaurant at sea.

Relaxation and Wellness
AmaWaterways places a strong emphasis on holistic wellness and relaxation, offering a variety of onboard amenities and activities designed to nurture both body and mind. Guests can take part in daily fitness classes such as yoga, Pilates, stretching, and cardio sessions led by professional Wellness Hosts, as well as enjoy active options like guided walks, biking, and even meditation or tai chi depending on the itinerary. Onboard facilities typically include well-equipped fitness rooms, walking tracks, Pickleball courts and heated sun-deck pools or whirlpools for unwinding while taking in scenic river views. For deeper relaxation, many ships feature spa treatment rooms where guests can book massages, along with tranquil spaces offering infused detox waters and quiet areas to recharge. On select ships like the AmaMagna, an expanded wellness studio includes additional features such as a salon and specialized fitness areas, elevating the overall experience. Together, these offerings create a balanced onboard environment focused on relaxation, rejuvenation, and healthy living throughout the journey.

Entertainment and Enrichment
Onboard entertainment and enrichment with AmaWaterways are thoughtfully designed to complement the destinations visited, offering a more intimate and culturally focused experience rather than large-scale productions. Evenings typically feature live music in the main lounge—from resident pianists to local musicians and guest performers—along with occasional themed events, trivia, or dance nights that create a relaxed, social atmosphere. During the day and on scenic sailing stretches, guests can enjoy enrichment activities such as destination talks, historical lectures, cooking demonstrations, wine tastings, and cultural presentations led by experts or cruise managers, helping deepen their understanding of each region. Additional touches like film screenings, small libraries, and in-room entertainment further enhance the onboard experience. Overall, AmaWaterways emphasizes meaningful, destination-inspired programming that blends entertainment with education, creating a refined and engaging atmosphere throughout the journey.

In 2026, AmaWaterways launched a partnership with Smithsonian Journeys featurings specially designed river cruises where guests enjoy AmaWaterways’ ships and service alongside Smithsonian-curated experiences—such as lectures and discussions led by expert historians, scientists, and scholars travelling onboard. Together, they offer immersive itineraries across major rivers in Europe (and beyond), with exclusive excursions and enrichment designed to deepen travellers’ understanding of local history, art, and culture—essentially blending comfortable travel with a “learning journey” approach.
