One of the highlights of any Rhine cruise is a visit to Cologne (Köln in German), the fourth largest city in Germany. The history of Köln dates back over 2,000 years when it was known as Colonia Claudia Ara Agrippinensium. It was founded in the year 50 AD by the Roman general Agrippa, and was named in honour of Emperor Claudius. It quickly became an important centre of trade and commerce due to its strategic location on the Rhine. Throughout the Middle Ages, Köln continued to thrive as a major trading centre and was a key player in the Hanseatic League, a medieval commercial and defensive network of merchant guilds and market towns in Central and Northern Europe. The city suffered extensive damage during World War II and was completely rebuilt, including the famous Köln Cathedral, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Speyer's magnificent cathedral, an example of Romanesque architecture that stands as one of the largest structures of its kind in the world, was commissioned by Emperor Conrad II in the 11th century. Visitors can explore its grand interior, which features intricate vaulted ceilings, ornate stained-glass windows, and a grand organ that dates back to the 18th century.
One of the highlights of Rüdesheim is its wine culture. The town is home to some of the finest vineyards in Germany, and is particularly famous for its Riesling wine, made from grapes grown on the steep slopes of the nearby hills. A popular attraction is the Cable Car, which offers breath-taking views as you travel from the town centre up to the Niederwald Monument. This 38-metre-tall monument that commemorates the unification of Germany in 1871.
