Viking River Cruises

Introduction
Viking Cruises is a leading luxury travel company known for its destination-focused river voyages that emphasize cultural immersion and enrichment. Founded in 1997 by Norwegian entrepreneur Torstein Hagen, the brand has grown from a small fleet operating in Russia to a global cruise line offering journeys along some of the world’s most iconic rivers, including those in Europe, Africa and Asia. Viking’s river cruises are designed for curious travellers, featuring elegant Scandinavian-style ships, guided shore excursions in every port, and onboard programs such as lectures, performances, and culinary experiences that connect guests with local cultures.

The Fleet
Viking Cruises operates one of the largest and most modern fleets of river vessels in the world, with more than 75 ships sailing across world’s major waterways . The fleet is best known for its award-winning Viking Longships, which feature sleek Scandinavian design, innovative engineering, and spacious accommodations such as veranda staterooms and large suites . In addition to these signature ships, Viking also operates specialized vessels tailored to specific regions, including custom-built ships for the Nile, the Mississippi, and smaller European rivers, all designed to navigate local conditions while maintaining consistent comfort and style . Across the fleet, ships are intentionally small and intimate—typically carrying fewer than 200 guests—allowing for a more relaxed atmosphere and direct access to ports in the heart of each destination.

Accommodation Choices
Viking ships offer a range of accommodations that are consistent across their river fleets, all designed in a clean, Scandinavian style with an emphasis on comfort and functionality. Options typically range from standard staterooms with small windows to French balcony and Veranda staterooms, up to larger two-room suites like Veranda and Explorer Suites with separate living areas and full balconies. All accommodations emphasize thoughtful design, ample storage, and modern comforts (flat screen TVs, quality linens, and well designed bathrooms), with variations depending on the ship and region. Staterooms typically include both 110 V and 220 V outlets (often with USB) for charging devices and free Wi-Fi throughout the ship.

Destinations
Viking Cruises offers an extensive range of destinations. Its river cruises primarily explore Europe’s major waterways—such as the Rhine, Danube, Seine, Douro, Elbe, Moselle, Main & Rhône - as well as more exotic routes like the Nile in Egypt, the Mekong in Southeast Asia, and the Mississippi River in the United States, showcasing the American South and Midwest with stops like New Orleans, Memphis, and St. Paul. Across all destinations, the line emphasizes immersive, port-intensive itineraries that allow guests to experience local history, culture, and landscapes in depth rather than just passing through destinations.

Dining
Viking emphasizes high quality, regionally inspired meals in inclusive venues like The Restaurant (main dining room) and the Aquavit Terrace (an innovative indoor-outdoor dining space), with complimentary beverages at lunch and dinner - all designed to enhance the cultural experience of each itinerary. Both dining options feature open-seating and guest get to choose where and with whom they dine for each meal. The atmosphere is generally smart casual, relaxed but polished. Complimentary wine, beer, and soft drinks are served with lunch and dinner and a 24 hour beverage station (coffee/tea) and snacks are also usually available onboard.

Relaxation and Wellness
European Longships do not include full spa facilities or a gym. Instead, they highlight comfortable common areas and outdoor deck spaces where guests can enjoy the river scenery at a relaxed pace. There’s often a sun deck with a walking track, which is the closest on board space for light activity, stretching, or a quiet stroll. On select Viking river ships sailing outside Europe (for example on the Yangtze River, not the typical European Longships), you may find spa and wellness treatment options such as massages, facials, and body treatments. These aim to help you relax and unwind after excursions.

Entertainment and Enrichment
Live performances by local ensembles or classical musicians are often featured during the cruise, providing an elegant backdrop in lounges or common spaces. On many itineraries there’s at least one onboard performance tied to local culture — for example, Portuguese fado singing or Viennese opera excerpts — giving you a taste of the region’s artistic traditions. Daily talks on the history, art, architecture, geography, and culture of the regions you’re visiting help deepen your understanding of each destination. These may also include multimedia presentations about the next day’s port. Onboard demos highlight local crafts (e.g., glassblowing, lace making) and regional foods — like apple strudel or specialty coffees — tying your experience to the cuisine and traditions of the area. In the evening, the cruise staff or local performers host activities like informal shows, music in lounges, trivia, or conversation gatherings that encourage socializing among guests.
