Cruising the Mekong

Imagine sailing through the heart of Vietnam and Cambodia on the intimate AmaDara. Our Mekong River cruise offered us cultural immersion and unforgettable sights. From traditional villages to lively markets, our journey was a dream come true. Discover our adventure by reading Dan Galbraith's full review below.

My wife and I had always dreamed of exploring Vietnam and Cambodia and after some careful research, we realized that a Mekong River cruise would be the perfect way to immerse ourselves in these fascinating countries. We chose to sail aboard the AmaDara, a decision that turned out to be just right for us. This intimate river ship, with only 62 staterooms, offered us a close-up view of the Mekong as a lifeline to millions of people along its banks. One of the highlights of our cruise was the cultural immersion we experienced. The guided tours took us to ancient temples, traditional villages, and bustling markets, giving us a deep understanding of the local culture and history. Onboard, the enriching activities were equally engaging—cultural performances, cooking classes, and insightful lectures about the region kept us entertained and informed throughout our journey. The Mekong, with its incredible biodiversity and vital role as a highway for so many, left a lasting impression on us. Sailing on the AmaDara, we felt like we were truly experiencing the heart of Southeast Asia in comfort and style. We decided to extend our adventure by spending a few days in Ho Chi Minh City before the cruise and exploring Angkor Wat afterward. Both are highly recommended!

A close-up view of everyday life along the Mekong River

Life along the Mekong River pulses with timeless rhythms and vibrant traditions, and cruising these waters unveils a tapestry of experiences. We visited silk making and rattan mat workshops, candy and rice paper businesses, and made a heartwarming trip to a rural elementary school. Kampong Tralach invites you to journey back in time on an ox cart while a tuk-tuk tour of Phnom Penh contrasts its historic splendour with the sombre reminders of the Khmer Rouge era. Each moment on this river celebrates culture and community, offering a poignant reminder of Southeast Asia’s rich, enduring spirit.

The Mekong flows through a region steeped in ancient history and fascinating culture

Both Vietnam and Cambodia are countries with a rich ancient history and a somber modern past. Our journey allowed us to witness both—the awe-inspiring ancient temples and intricate palace grounds, alongside the haunting remnants of soldiers’ tunnels and the solemnity of the killing fields. The contrast between these eras was profound, offering us a deeper understanding of the resilience and spirit of the people in this remarkable part of the world.

The friendly and welcoming faces of Vietnam and Cambodia

We had the privilege of experiencing both the bustling energy of Vietnam’s Ho Chi Minh City and Cambodia’s Phnom Penh, as well as the quieter charm of small towns and villages along the Mekong. We encountered people in all walks of life—celebrating holidays, working in shops and markets, and simply going about their daily routines. We were invited into homes, shared moments with monks in serene monasteries, and waved to fishermen as we sailed by. Everywhere we went, we felt safe and warmly welcomed by the people who call this vibrant region home.
